Gateway policy
The University will ensure that all occupants meet the following criteria both from a planning and operational perspective:
Large (> 250 staff) and medium (10 - 250 staff) sized companies will
- 1. Agree links to the university that will provide substantial benefi t to, or synergy with, the university (examples of acceptable benefits are listed below) and
- 2. Be engaged in knowledge-based activities
Small enterprises or organisations (< 10 staff) will
- 1. Have a business plan that includes growth targets, ie not a lifestyle business, and
- 2. Be present on campus and working with the university or its subsidiary companies, or be able to demonstrate alignment with the university’s industrial or knowledge clusters
Use Restrictions
Uses not to include signifi cant routine manufacturing operations, although special laboratory production facilities, (eg clean room operation) and product development activities could be accommodated. there will be other criteria in the detailed policy and tenancy agreements covering such issues as:
- Health, safety and environment
- Allowable materials and processes
- Good neighbour issues
- Building alterations
Special Exemptions
The above may be relaxed by agreement with the university for special cases, eg if a professional institution wished to be based on the park or where development would bring significant benefit to the regional economy.
List of benefits acceptable to the university
- Research contracts
- Student placements
- Sponsorship of a chair (professorship) or research posts
- Provision of specialist facilities (eg a clean room)
- Continuing professional development
- Scope for development of a major new area of academic or research activity that aligns with the university's strategic plan
- Other contractual agreement with the university that would support co-location
